50-cent Hand Saver:

I use this tool often in areas where the larger ones won't fit.  Even wearing gloves I inevitably blister my hands, and also tear the rubber cover on the tool...

To solve this, I found that a 3/4" PVC tee with a 1/2" threaded tail fits perfectly (with a few taps of a hammer) on the end.  This allows much more surface area against the hand (lessening blisters), and if placed perpendicular to the blade, better control as well.

This also works well on shovels, hula hoes, and other tools without a horizontal grip - just select your PVC size accordingly.  You may also anchor it into the handle by pre-drilling the PVC and adding a few screws.
